Surfing and Windsurfing in Ireland |
|||||||||||
|
Ireland's
west coast has some of Europe's
best surf. Storms in the Atlantic Ocean produce regular swells which reach
Ireland's west coast unhindered. Donegal's long and varied coast provides
numerous reef and beach breaks. For the adventurous, there are many unsurfed
areas waiting to be explored. We regularly have overseas visitors who
come for a holiday, discover what we have here, and stay for a year or
more. |

Bundoran,
and it's immediate surroundings, is Ireland's number one surfing area.
The European Surfing Championships were held here in 1988 and again
in 1997. Surfing professionals, publications and film makers are regular
visitors. The Quiksilver Masters was held in September 2001 and the
World Championships is being considered for some time in the future.

The best swells/water temperature
combination is probably September to November with April to June coming
next, although the water is just starting to warm in April.

themselves. Nicole Morgan, Irish Ladies surfing Champion (2003).

few years around the world. |

| The surf-generating storms often bring strong winds along with the surf as they track off northwards. This makes Ireland an ideal location for windsurfing, especially in the spring, summer and autumn months. The winter wind chill factor can be too cold on your hands! However that's where the hot showers and drying room at Fishery Cottages help! | |||||||||||
